Boise State Athletics announced on May 4 that Tyler Whitmer will return to the university as Associate Athletic Director, Performance and Culture. Whitmer previously worked at Boise State from 2018 to 2025, and his first day back is Monday.
In his new position, Whitmer will oversee all aspects of men’s basketball sports performance and serve as the team’s secondary sport administrator. He will also be responsible for building a unified culture across all Boise State athletic programs and supporting athlete and team development. Additionally, he will join Boise State’s senior staff administrative team.
“I am truly excited and grateful to be returning to Boise State Athletics in a role focused on strengthening culture and supporting professional development for our staff, coaches and student-athletes,” said Whitmer. “My family and I are blessed to continue to call Boise State home. I am beyond grateful for Jeramiah Dickey for allowing me the opportunity to come back and invest in people who make this community so special. I look forward to helping foster growth, performance, connection, and continued success across Bronco Athletics. Go Broncos!”
Jeramiah Dickey, Boise State director of athletics, said: “Whitmer is ELITE and a Bar Raiser, and he’s going to elevate our athletic department – just like he did when he was here before. He is great at connecting and creating personal and professional growth in individuals and teams, which will impact our 18 sport programs and 350+ student-athletes. He’s also great in establishing a strong culture, something Coach Rice and I value and want to see continue to play out with our men’s basketball team. We’re going to double down on what it means to be a Bronco, and we know Whitmer will play a big role in shaping our present and future success.”
Leon Rice, head coach of men’s basketball at Boise State said: “We are so excited to bring back Whitmer and see his impact once again on our basketball program. Whitmer is such a special person who knows how to get the best out of our guys, on-and-off the court. He sets a culture that pushes our players to be their very best, and I can’t wait to see that once again on our team but the entire athletic department as well.”
Previously at Boise State, Whitmer managed sports performance for Olympic sports along with athlete development responsibilities for men’s basketball—where he contributed during three straight NCAA Tournament appearances from 2021 through 2023—and men’s tennis where he helped secure three conference championships.
Whitmer began working at Boise State in January 2018 as associate director before advancing through several roles including director of sports performance (2018-22) up through assistant athletic director (2022-25). Outside of his time with the Broncos program he has held positions at Oral Roberts University (2013-18), MidAmerica Nazarene (2012-13), Denver (2011), most recently working with Teamworks.
Bronco Nation can hear more from Whitmer about his new role during a live interview scheduled Monday afternoon.
