Boise State’s softball team recorded a 9-1 win over Weber State on Sunday, concluding the Blue Collar Classic in Boise, Idaho. The Broncos improved their season record to 12-15, while the Wildcats fell to 5-21.
The scoring began in the first inning when Marissa Gonzalez and Mya Flindt hit back-to-back home runs with two outs. In the third inning, Kate Penberthy added a three-run home run to give Boise State a 5-0 lead.
Weber State scored its only run in the fourth inning. Boise State responded in the bottom of the frame with four more runs. Skylar Stroh contributed an RBI single and later scored on Gonzalez’s second home run of the game. The final run came on a fielder’s choice.
Charley Duran pitched four innings for Boise State, allowing one unearned run on four hits and striking out three batters. “Marissa Gonzalez was 3-for-3 with two home runs, three RBI and three runs,” according to game notes provided by Boise State Athletics. “Kate Penberthy went 3-for-3 with a double and a three-run home run.”
Other highlights included Mya Flindt hitting her seventh home run of the season and Skylar Stroh driving in her team-leading 24th run. Ashley Hernandez-Lofton stole her sixth base without being caught this year. Charley Duran lowered her earned run average to 2.60, which currently leads all pitchers on the Broncos’ roster.
Boise State will begin Mountain West Conference play next week with a three-game series at Nevada from March 13 to March 15.
