Boise State University has expanded its financial education initiatives by introducing Robinhood Money Drills, a course available for graduation credit to all students. The program includes specific workshops designed for student-athletes, focusing on the distinct financial circumstances they face in college athletics.
With assistance from Robinhood, input from Boise State’s College of Business and Economics faculty, and sessions led by Financial Footwork, the initiative aims to provide student-athletes with practical knowledge in budgeting, saving, taxes, investing, credit management, and understanding Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) opportunities. The goal is to help participants make informed decisions beyond their athletic careers.
Sara Whiles, Associate Athletic Director for BroncoLife & Varsity B, said: “We are grateful to Robinhood and Financial Footwork for bringing this innovative financial education program to our student-athletes and ensuring they have access to the tools needed to succeed both now and in the future. As revenue-sharing opportunities expand and student-athletes begin earning income earlier than ever, programs like this are essential.”
Former Boise State offensive lineman and NFL veteran Charles Leno Jr. visited campus to discuss financial planning with current Bronco athletes. Leno Jr., who played for Boise State from 2009-2013 before being drafted by the Chicago Bears in 2014 and spending 11 years in the NFL, spoke about his experiences managing finances as a professional athlete. He noted: “I want Bronco student-athletes to be ready for the opportunities ahead. When I was drafted, I had limited financial guidance and I had to learn through experience. If I can help them avoid some of those early mistakes, that is a win.” Last summer, Leno Jr. and his wife Jenn joined the Lyle Smith Society (LSS), supporting Bronco football programs through their donation.
According to university data since launching Robinhood Money Drills two years ago, 95% of participating students report improved ability in managing personal finances as a result of the course. Surveys also indicate strong interest among students in topics such as taxes, investing, and debt management.
BroncoLife provides ongoing programming that supports student-athletes’ personal growth, community engagement, and career development throughout their time at Boise State.
Robinhood Money Drills began in 2022 as a graduation-credit course focused on giving student-athletes skills for managing their finances.
