Boise State men’s tennis split its matches on March 14 at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center, losing 4-1 to No. 38 Santa Clara before securing a narrow 4-3 win over DePaul.
The day’s first match saw No. 61 Boise State fall to Santa Clara, who claimed the doubles point after winning two of three matches. Carson Baker and Avery Tallakson started strong for the Broncos by defeating the No. 27 ranked pair from Santa Clara, Luca Bluett and John Kim, with a score of 6-1 on court one. However, Santa Clara responded by taking the next two doubles contests and then won key singles matches to secure victory.
In singles play against Santa Clara, Tallakson provided Boise State’s only point with a hard-fought win over Alexander Watanabe Eriksson in three sets. Other singles victories for Santa Clara included wins by Bluett, Vilchis, and Maskow.
Later in the day, Boise State faced DePaul and again dropped the doubles point as DePaul’s pairs clinched both completed matches. The Broncos rallied in singles competition with Tallakson evening the match on court one and Julius Seifert adding another win on court six. Taiyo Kurata gave Boise State the lead with his own singles victory before Stewart Aronson sealed the team win by coming back from a set down to defeat Pablo Torres Almeida on court two.
The results marked just the second meeting between Boise State and DePaul in program history, with Boise State now leading that series 2-0. Against Santa Clara, Boise State dropped its seventh all-time match but still leads their series overall at 11-7. Notable individual achievements included Baker and Tallakson’s doubles win over a nationally ranked pair from Santa Clara; Kurata notching his twentieth singles victory of the season—the first Bronco to reach that mark this year—and Seifert earning his tenth duals singles win.
Looking ahead, Boise State men’s tennis is scheduled to host Nevada on March 20 at 5 p.m.
