Boise State men’s tennis team split its matches during a trip to Phoenix, suffering a 5-2 loss against No. 60 Grand Canyon before defeating Lipscomb 7-0.
Against Grand Canyon, the Broncos fell behind early after losing the doubles point. Daniel Jankoski and Brice Patoux secured a win for Grand Canyon on court one, while Tim Hohmann and Charlie Pade clinched the point on court three. Boise State’s Avery Tallakson leveled the match with a straight-set singles victory, followed by Carson Baker putting the Broncos ahead with another win. However, Grand Canyon responded by winning four of the remaining singles matches to secure the overall victory.
In their second match, Boise State quickly took control against Lipscomb by winning the doubles point. Idriss Haddouch and Filip Soderqvist claimed a win on court three, while Taiyo Kurata and Julius Seifert added another on court one. The Broncos then won all six singles matches, including three in straight sets, resulting in a 7-0 sweep.
Notable performances included Carson Baker achieving his 15th and 16th singles wins of the season and maintaining an undefeated record at the No. 4 spot. Avery Tallakson also remained unbeaten at No. 2 singles. Additionally, Haddouch and Soderqvist recorded their first victory as a doubles pair.
Head coach Luke Shields commented on his team’s performance: “We had a good bounce back win after a tough match versus Grand Canyon,” Shields said. “We believe in this team and we will keep learning and get stronger throughout the course of the season.”
The meeting between Boise State and Lipscomb marked their first-ever matchup, which resulted in a win for Boise State. The team has now achieved four sweeps with scores of 7-0 this season.
Next up for Boise State are home matches against Linfield at 2 p.m. MT and Idaho at 6 p.m. MT on February 7.
