Boise State University’s men’s tennis team is set to travel to Phoenix for a doubleheader on February 21. The Broncos will play against Grand Canyon University at noon Mountain Time, followed by a match with Lipscomb University at 5 p.m. MT.
Grand Canyon enters the match ranked No. 60 in the national Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, which is currently the highest ranking among Mountain West teams. The Lopes have an overall record of 8-1 and are undefeated at home this season. Their only loss was a close 4-3 defeat at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. This upcoming game marks just the second meeting between Boise State and Grand Canyon; Boise State leads the series after winning their previous encounter 5-2 on January 16, 2016.
Lipscomb arrives with a 4-2 record, including a notable win over No. 20 UT Southern earlier in the season. However, they are coming off a recent loss to Vanderbilt. This will be the first time Boise State faces Lipscomb in program history.
Several individual milestones are within reach for Boise State players. Stewart Aronson is two singles wins away from reaching 15 victories this season, while Carson Baker and Lukas Velik each need one more singles win to achieve that mark. In doubles competition, Aronson and Filip Soderqvist also require two more wins as a pair to reach 15 victories.
Filip Soderqvist was named Mountain West Freshman of the Week on February 18, earning his first career honor and becoming the first Bronco to receive a weekly conference accolade this season.
Carson Baker remains the only active player on Boise State’s roster who has previously earned All-Mountain West honors in both singles and doubles events.
The current Broncos roster features seven returning players: Baker, Adam Duda, Idriss Haddouch, Taiyo Kurata, Julius Seifert, Michael Seversen, and Velik. New additions include transfers Stewart Aronson from Clemson and Avery Talllakson from New Mexico, along with freshman Soderqvist.
According to ITA rankings released on February 19, Grand Canyon is ranked No. 60 nationally while Boise State holds the No. 63 spot. In doubles rankings, Lipscomb’s Facundo Perlov and Henrique Ushizima are ranked No. 68 nationally; Grand Canyon’s Tristan Berard and Andreas Loizas are ranked No. 90.
Boise State has claimed five regular-season conference titles since joining conferences that use round-robin formats starting in 2009—one Western Athletic Conference title that year followed by three Mountain West titles in subsequent years (2012, 2014, 2024 and 2025).
In terms of postseason achievements, since joining its current conference in 2012 Boise State has won six Mountain West tournament championships (2012–2015; most recently in both 2023 and 2024). Overall program history includes a total of eighteen conference tournament titles across four different leagues: Big Sky (1974; multiple years through mid-1990s), Big West (late ’90s through early ’00s), Western Athletic (early-to-mid-2000s), as well as their recent Mountain West successes.
The Broncos have participated in twenty-one NCAA tournaments throughout their history—including appearances each year from 2023 through last season.
