Boise State defeated Utah State in a softball doubleheader sweep on April 8, led by Marissa Gonzalez’s standout performance at the plate.
The victories are significant for Boise State, improving their record to 20-23 overall and 6-8 in Mountain West play. The Broncos won the first game 11-6 and took the second game with a decisive 13-2 score over six innings.
Gonzalez was key for Boise State, going four-for-six with a double, three home runs, seven runs batted in, and five runs scored across both games. In the opener, she hit a three-run home run to start the scoring for Boise State and later added another solo home run. Other notable contributions included Skylar Stroh’s leadoff home run and Jorja Crider’s two-run shot during a three-run third inning. Rustie Riley drove in two more runs late to help secure the win.
In game two, Gonzalez again started strong with a solo homer. Talia Jenkins contributed significantly as well with five total RBI over both games—including four in game two—while Kate Penberthy added power with her own home run. The Broncos pulled away late by scoring eight runs in the sixth inning of game two.
Additional highlights included Kodi Crabtree earning her first collegiate save by pitching the final six outs of game two. According to team notes provided after the series, Boise State has now won seven consecutive meetings against Utah State and hit six total home runs during this doubleheader.
Looking ahead, Boise State is set to begin a two-game series at nationally-ranked Grand Canyon on Friday at 8 p.m.
