Student designers at Boise State University are taking center stage in the university’s 2026 production of “Grease,” according to an April 13 announcement. The Theatre Arts Program and Department of Music are presenting the classic musical with a focus on student-led creativity, from costumes and sets to digital projections and choreography.
The production highlights the important role that hands-on experience plays in preparing students for future careers in theater. By involving students directly in every aspect of the show, the program aims to provide real-world opportunities for learning and professional growth.
Jordan Russell, a theatre arts student responsible for designing digital projections, said, “I think […] the highlight is that I have the opportunity to be creative with creative people. I am so grateful to be in a room with so many professional, passionate individuals that created space and encouraged me to bring my artistic skills to the table. Getting to practice being a working professional with Boise State and the Morrison Center, which has hosted many skilled and seasoned artists, is really a treat.” Russell also added, “From the very start, I never felt like ‘just a student designer.’ Everyone was so encouraging and open to what I brought to the table, which helped me feel confident to present my ideas in a professional environment.”
Michael Scherer designed props for this year’s show. Scherer said working on productions provides essential behind-the-scenes experience: “This has been vital behind-the-scenes experience, seeing how plays develop and all the necessary roles needed to mount a production. There is no substitute for working on a project together with high demands and tight deadlines.” Scherer also noted that collaborating on props helped him form new relationships: “Designing props has allowed me to form relationships that might not have happened otherwise.”
Russell described theater as highly collaborative: “One of the best things about theatre as an artform is that it is highly collaborative,” Russell said. “And getting to support other artists with my own work is a wonderful experience.” Both students emphasized how faculty feedback during weekly meetings contributed positively toward their development.
Tickets for Grease can be purchased through the Morrison Center website. All Boise State students and employees may receive one free ticket by presenting their university ID at the box office during business hours while supplies last.
