The Boise State track and field team will start its outdoor season this weekend, competing in three separate meets across California and Nevada, according to an April 2 announcement. The Broncos are set to participate in the Stanford Invitational in Stanford, the Mike Fanelli Track Classic in San Francisco, and the UNLV Rebel Elite meet in Las Vegas.
This opening marks a new phase for the Broncos following a successful indoor campaign where eight athletes earned All-Mountain West honors. The team’s strong performance last year saw seven athletes qualify for the NCAA West Regional, with three advancing further to compete at the NCAA Championships.
The lineup for this weekend’s events includes both men’s and women’s teams competing across a variety of disciplines. At the Mike Fanelli Track Classic, female athletes will run in events such as the 5000 meters, 3000 meter steeplechase, 1500 meters, and 800 meters. Male athletes are entered in similar distance races including the 5000 meters and 1500 meters.
At the Stanford Invitational, several women will compete on Friday in races ranging from the 5000 meters to the steeplechase and up to longer distances like the 10,000 meters. Men will take part primarily in middle- and long-distance events as well. Meanwhile at UNLV Rebel Elite meet in Las Vegas, both teams have entries spanning sprints (100m/200m), hurdles (110m/400m), jumps (high jump/long jump/triple jump), throws (hammer/discus/shot put/javelin), as well as relay teams scheduled for both days of competition.
With these early season meets spread over two states featuring multiple disciplines and dozens of student-athletes from Boise State participating, coaches hope these competitions provide valuable experience ahead of major championships later this spring.
