The Boise State women’s tennis team will seek its 12th and 13th consecutive victories as it hosts Nevada on March 27 and UNLV on March 29 at the Appleton Tennis Center.
The matches are important as the Broncos look to remain undefeated in Mountain West play and improve their record to 6-0, which would be their best start since joining the conference in 2011. Both Boise State and UNLV currently hold perfect records in conference play, setting up a key matchup for league standings.
Nevada arrives with a recent boost after wins over Wyoming and Colorado State, holding an overall record of 6-7 and standing at .500 within the Mountain West. The all-time series between Boise State and Nevada is close, with Nevada leading by just one win. UNLV comes into the weekend riding an eight-match winning streak; they will face Utah State before meeting Boise State. Last season, the Broncos secured only their second-ever victory against UNLV, who lead the historical series.
Boise State has achieved national recognition this season, ranking No. 49 in ITA rankings and No. 45 according to UTR Sports collegiate team rankings. Head coach Beck Roghaar became the program’s all-time winningest coach earlier this year with his 182nd career victory; he now enters these matches with a total of 186 wins.
Several players have received individual honors: Zdena Safarova earned her fifth and sixth career Mountain West Player of the Week awards this month—more than any other active player—while Carla Grignac was named both Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week in January after defeating a nationally ranked opponent.
Looking back at last season, Boise State claimed its first conference tournament championship since 2010 by defeating Fresno State, San Diego State, and UNLV for the title. Roghaar was recognized as both Mountain West Coach of the Year (for a third time) and ITA Mountain Region Coach of the Year—the latter making him only the second coach in program history to receive regional honors.
