The Boise State women’s tennis team is set to play against Utah Tech in St. George, Utah, on Saturday, March 7 at 10 a.m. Mountain Time. This matchup marks the second consecutive season the two teams have faced each other. Last year, Boise State defeated Utah Tech 7-0 in Boise.
Utah Tech comes into the match with a 5-8 record for the season. The Broncos are currently ranked No. 50 in the latest UTR Sports collegiate team rankings, moving up nine spots from their previous ranking after recording 4-0 wins over Gonzaga and Eastern Washington.
Head coach Beck Roghaar has recently become the program’s all-time winningest coach with his 182nd career victory, surpassing Mark Tichenor’s previous record during the win against Gonzaga. Roghaar is in his 16th season as head coach and was named both MW and ITA Mountain Region Coach of the Year for the 2024-25 season. “The former marked his third conference Coach of the Year honor, while the latter was the first regional recognition of his career, making him just the second coach in program history to receive the award.”
Carla Grignac earned both MW Player and Freshman of the Week honors on January 28 after her win at No. 6 singles against nationally ranked Washington. “She became the third player in MW history and the second in program history to earn both honors in the same week,” according to Boise State.
The Broncos are defending Mountain West champions after winning their first conference tournament title since 2010 by defeating Fresno State, San Diego State, and UNLV during last year’s tournament.
In terms of individual achievements, Zdena Safarova holds sixth place for most career No. 1 singles wins at Boise State with 25 victories. Gaye McManus remains atop that list with 50 wins from 1994 to 1998.
Last season, Safarova earned All-MW honors in singles and doubles and was named MW Tournament MVP as well as MW All-Tournament No. 1 Singles honoree. Paula Schaefer received All-Tournament No. 4 Singles recognition, while Masa Viriant was named All-Tournament No. 6 Singles.
The current roster includes six returning players: Ryan Kershner (senior), Lorelyz Marruffo (redshirt senior), Ella Piron (junior), Safarova (junior), Schaefer (sophomore), and Viriant (sophomore). New additions include transfers Allison Isaacs (senior) and Tereza Polakova (junior), along with freshmen Stella Beldiman and Grignac.
On staff changes, Bhakti Shah returns as an assistant coach after graduating in 2025, joining Shauna Heffernan who continues as an assistant coach taking on responsibilities previously held by Errol Smith.
