Boise State’s beach volleyball team completed a challenging weekend in Los Angeles, finishing with one win and three losses at the Battle for LA tournament. The Broncos, who hold a 4-4 overall record and are receiving votes in the AVCA Collegiate Beach Poll, faced some of the nation’s top-ranked teams during the event.
Boise State suffered defeats against No. 2 UCLA, No. 3 Cal Poly, and No. 8 Loyola Marymount University (LMU). Their sole victory came with a decisive 5-0 sweep over CSUN, marking their first sweep of the season.
The tournament began with Boise State taking on UCLA. After losing the first match on court four, Ava Anderson and Addison Wolden won their match in straight sets (21-14, 21-19) to tie the score. However, UCLA responded by winning the next three matches for a final score of 4-1.
Later that day, Boise State played Cal Poly but lost all five matches in straight sets.
On Saturday, Anderson and Wolden again secured an opening win against CSUN. Keira Demirjian and Charlee Ellena came from behind on court four to extend Boise State’s lead. The Broncos then picked up additional straight-set wins before Allyson Alden and Serena van der Made sealed the sweep with a three-set victory on the top court.
In their final match of the weekend against LMU, Boise State dropped the first point but evened things up through another win by Anderson and Wolden. LMU took control by winning two more matches to clinch the dual. Alden and van der Made narrowly missed a comeback on court one but ultimately lost in three sets (21-18, 19-21, 15-13).
Boise State recorded its first sweep of the season with its victory over CSUN and now leads CSUN 4-2 in their all-time series. Anderson and Wolden finished the weekend with a 3-1 record, earning wins against both UCLA and LMU’s highly ranked teams.
With their performance this weekend, Anderson and Wolden reached 26 career victories as a pair—the third-most in program history—and are now three wins away from tying Sharli O’Neil and Elli Wolthuis’s all-time record of 29 wins as a duo. Additionally, Addison Wolden became just the eighth Bronco ever to reach 60 career victories; she accomplished this milestone faster than any previous player in program history at just 84 duals.
Wolden is among four active Broncos with more than 60 career wins: Anderson has accumulated 67 wins; Wolthuis has tallied 65; Lily Patock has achieved 63 victories. Anderson also set a new program mark for most career victories on court two (35), surpassing Rorianna Chartier’s previous record of 34.
The Broncos will have their only open weekend of the season before traveling to compete at the South Carolina Classic scheduled for March 13–14 in Columbia, South Carolina.
