Idaho’s Medicaid payments amounted to $3,738,600 in 2024 for services categorized under Medical and Surgical Supplies, data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Medicaid Provider Spending database shows. This represented a 0.1% uptick over 2023, when claims for these services stood at $3,734,780.

Medicaid is a state-administered public health insurance program that receives joint funding from federal and state governments. It provides coverage for low-income individuals, families, seniors, children, and those with disabilities, making it one of the largest health care programs in the U.S.

Since Medicaid is funded by tax dollars, shifts in local billing reflect the way community public health care funds are distributed.

The Medical and Surgical Supplies classification includes Medicaid-billed services grouped by care type, using standardized HCPCS and CPT coding structures. Each billing code for this analysis was organized into a single service category based on defined code prefixes and numeric sequences, ensuring related service comparisons and preventing duplicate counts or ranking errors over time.

Some categories may span various types of services. When this occurs, the category captures associated care frequently billed as a group within Medicaid, such as office consultations, diagnostic screening and therapeutic interventions.

In the five-year period prior to 2024, Medicaid payments for the Medical and Surgical Supplies category in Idaho climbed by $1,196,468, a 47.1% increase. The rate of spending growth was faster in certain years, including noteworthy jumps in 2020 and 2022.

Payments for Medical and Surgical Supplies were made throughout the state, but a minority of ZIP codes received a larger share. In 2024, ZIP Code 83642 led with $939,691 in Medicaid payments for these services (25.1% of the total), followed by ZIP Code 83301 with $475,987 (12.7%), and ZIP Code 83687 with $333,061 (8.9%).

Together, these three ZIP codes made up 46.8% of all Medicaid payments tied to the Medical and Surgical Supplies category statewide for the year.

For comparison, Medicaid payments across all categories in Idaho increased by 7.6% between 2023 and 2024.

Despite increases across several service areas, Medical and Surgical Supplies remained among the top 10 Medicaid service categories in Idaho for total payments in 2024.

According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, total state and federal Medicaid spending was approximately $871.7 billion in fiscal year 2023, which accounted for roughly 18% of the nation’s health expenditures. That figure has risen sharply since 2019, when spending was about $613.5 billion, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This growth equals close to a 40% increase in a few years, primarily due to expanded Medicaid rolls and increased service use during and after the pandemic period.

Recent federal budget actions during the Trump administration have included significant plans to reduce federal Medicaid investments and restructure the program. For instance, the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” enacted in 2025, is expected to reduce federal Medicaid funding by over $1 trillion over 10 years and introduces requirements such as work mandates and higher cost-sharing. These changes could lower coverage levels and funding for some enrollees, shifting more responsibility onto states and limiting future federal contributions, even as the program continues to provide coverage to tens of millions of Americans.
