Idaho Congressman Mike Simpson voted in favor of H.R. 6703, known as the Lower Health Care Premiums for All Americans Act. The bill aims to lower health care premium costs, increase access to care, provide more options for coverage, and improve transparency in the health care system.
Simpson commented on the bipartisan interest in reducing health care expenses: “Both Republicans and Democrats are serious about lowering the cost of health care. While we may have different ideas on how to fix the problem, the reality is that throwing more money at it through the Unaffordable Care Act has destroyed our nation’s health care system. The problems Republicans warned about more than ten years ago are now happening: increased fraud, inflated costs, reduced private coverage, and fewer options for Americans, all while health insurers collect big checks from Washington. The Lower Health Care Premiums for All Americans Act provides much-needed reform to lower health care costs for all Americans, not just those benefiting from the Biden COVID bonuses. This bill is a step in the right direction to fix our broken health care system,” said Rep. Simpson.
The press release referenced past statements by former President Obama regarding expected savings from his administration’s healthcare reforms and noted that premiums have increased significantly since then. Data shows that since Obamacare was enacted, premiums have risen by 80%, with average family annual premiums nearing $27,000—a record high—and rising faster than inflation over recent years.
A preliminary report from the Government Accountability Office highlighted vulnerabilities in the Affordable Care Act marketplace such as fraudulent claims using fictitious identities and misuse of Social Security numbers.
The new legislation includes measures like cost-sharing reduction payments to decrease premium costs; increasing transparency among pharmacy benefit managers; allowing small businesses and independent workers to form association health plans; giving employees more choices in customizing their healthcare plans; and protecting small businesses from regulatory burdens.
Supporters claim that this act will reduce Obamacare premiums by 12% and save taxpayers over $35 billion across ten years. The bill passed narrowly with a vote of 216-211.
Mike Simpson has represented Idaho’s 2nd congressional district since 1999 after serving previously in Idaho’s state legislature.
