Idaho Congressman Mike Simpson voted on March 18 in favor of H.R. 1958, known as the Deporting Fraudsters Act, which would make criminal aliens who defraud United States taxpayers subject to deportation. The legislation is sponsored by Representative David Taylor of Ohio and was approved with a vote of 231-186.
The bill aims to address concerns about individuals entering the country and committing fraud against American taxpayers. Supporters say it will close loopholes and strengthen federal officers’ ability to remove those found guilty of such offenses.
“Those who enter this country with the intent of defrauding the American people should not be allowed to stay,” Simpson said. “Foreign fraudsters who play the system and the American people must be held accountable. Billions of dollars in fraud were uncovered under the noses of failed leaders like Tim Walz and Keith Ellison in Minnesota. What happened in Minnesota should never have happened. This legislation closes loopholes, strengthens federal officers’ ability to remove illegal alien fraudsters, and protects the American taxpayer.”
Simpson has represented Idaho’s 2nd district in Congress since replacing Mike Crapo in 1999, according to available records. He previously served in the Idaho House of Representatives from 1984 to 1998, as reported by public sources.
Simpson was born in Burley, Idaho in 1950 and currently lives in Idaho Falls at age 72. He graduated from Utah State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1972.
The passage of H.R. 1958 marks another step by lawmakers seeking stricter measures against those who commit fraud while residing illegally in the United States.
