WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho), ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has commended the Liberian senate’s decision to establish a war and economic crimes court. Senator Risch stated, “Liberian President Boakai and the legislature’s recent move to establish a war and economic crimes court marks a significant step towards healing the wounds from Liberia’s civil wars. I urge President Boakai to quickly implement this historic resolution. The United States and international partners should also provide support for this critical process, ensuring it reflects the diverse perspectives of Liberian society.”

The establishment of the war and economic crimes court in Liberia comes in the wake of devastating civil wars that occurred from 1995 to 2003, resulting in 250,000 deaths and displacing millions of people. The lingering impact of these wars continues to affect those involved, hindering Liberia’s progress and its standing as a vital U.S. ally and Africa’s oldest democracy. Despite the passage of time, successive Liberian governments have struggled to effectively address transitional justice and accountability.

Senator Risch’s support for the establishment of the court underscores the importance of seeking justice and reconciliation in post-conflict societies. The move towards establishing the court is seen as a crucial step in addressing the atrocities committed during Liberia’s civil wars and fostering healing and unity among its people.

The Senator’s call for swift implementation of the resolution highlights the urgency of the situation and the need for immediate action to begin the process of accountability and healing. Additionally, his appeal for support from the United States and international partners emphasizes the collaborative effort required to ensure that the court’s proceedings are inclusive and representative of all sections of Liberian society.

As Liberia embarks on this significant journey towards establishing a war and economic crimes court, the international community’s support, including that of the United States, will play a pivotal role in aiding the country in its pursuit of justice, reconciliation, and ultimately, sustainable peace.
