Today, the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved the nomination of Representative Elise Stefanik as Ambassador to the United Nations. This decision advances her nomination to a full floor vote in the Senate.
U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen, who serves as the Ranking Member of the Committee, released a statement addressing this development. She highlighted several global issues that she believes are influenced by the work of the United Nations, such as infectious diseases, fentanyl trafficking, transnational crime, and political conflicts.
Shaheen expressed some reservations about Stefanik’s policies but acknowledged her commitment during the nomination hearing to review certain UN programs. Specifically, Shaheen noted Stefanik’s pledge to “personally review the United Nations Population Fund,” which focuses on family planning and maternal care among other responsibilities.
Senator Shaheen also voiced concerns regarding actions taken by the Trump Administration that she feels could impact national security. She mentioned “the Trump Administration’s decision to freeze foreign aid” and other measures that might have adverse effects.
The senator concluded her statement with an intention to collaborate with Stefanik on various national security priorities if she is confirmed for the position.
Last week at her nomination hearing, Representative Stefanik committed to examining women’s health programs, a point emphasized by Senator Shaheen in her remarks.
