U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen, the Ranking Member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has commented on the recent selection of Joseph Aoun as Lebanon’s President.

In her statement, Senator Shaheen described this development as “a significant and momentous occasion for Lebanon,” noting that it comes after more than two years of political deadlock. She highlighted Aoun’s longstanding service in the Lebanese Armed Forces, where he has served as commander since 2017.

Shaheen expressed support for Lebanon’s pursuit of a government that is “free from corruption” and dedicated to security and prosperity for its citizens while being committed to regional stability. She congratulated the Lebanese people on this important step.

The senator also referenced her collaboration with Committee Chairs Cardin and Reed last year to introduce the Preventing the Undermining of Lebanon’s Sovereignty and Economy (PULSE) Act. This legislation underscores the United States’ commitment to supporting Lebanon’s democratic institutions and addressing humanitarian challenges.

In recent months, Shaheen has voiced concerns about Lebanon’s situation, particularly when commenting on the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah.
