U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen, the Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has issued a statement in response to the Trump Administration’s decision to stop shipments of promised munitions and weapons systems to Ukraine. This decision comes amidst ongoing aerial attacks by Russia on Ukrainian cities.

Senator Shaheen expressed concern over the impact of this decision, stating: “The Pentagon is significantly weakening Ukraine’s defense against aerial attacks even as Russia pounds Ukrainian cities night after night, with numerous civilians dead and wounded.” She highlighted a recent pledge by President Trump to seek additional air defense systems for Ukraine, noting that Secretary Hegseth and Under Secretary Colby appear to be disregarding this commitment. She urged the administration to consult with relevant committees if there are concerns about stockpiles.

Shaheen criticized what she described as “mixed messaging” from the Trump Administration, which she believes is undermining efforts to engage Russian President Vladimir Putin in negotiations. She stated that actions under Secretary Hegseth’s leadership could complicate achieving a lasting peace. Additionally, she called on National Security Advisor Secretary Rubio to ensure a unified strategy towards Ukraine, warning against any actions that could undermine U.S. national security interests.
