U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen, the Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has reiterated her commitment to the alliance between the United States and South Korea. In a statement released today, she emphasized the importance of maintaining strong ties with South Korea, particularly during critical political times in Seoul.

“The Republic of Korea is a trusted partner and vital U.S. ally in the Indo-Pacific,” stated Shaheen. “My team and I are closely monitoring the political situation in Seoul, and it is essential for the United States to stand with the South Korean people as they uphold their commitment to democracy, resilience and the rule of law during these critical times.”

Shaheen underscored her dedication to advancing policies that align with President Biden’s administration efforts to bolster bilateral cooperation. She noted her role as lead Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and affirmed her recognition of an “ironclad alliance” with South Korea.

In April 2024, during a visit to the region, Shaheen reaffirmed U.S. commitment to extended deterrence on the Korean Peninsula. She also stressed trilateral engagement with Japan as crucial for regional stability.

As Co-Chair of the Senate NATO Observer Group, Shaheen has highlighted how challenges in both the Indo-Pacific and transatlantic regions are increasingly interconnected.
