U.S. Senators Jim Risch, Chris Coons, Jeanne Shaheen, and Todd Young have announced plans to introduce the Sudan Accountability Act in response to the ongoing civil war in Sudan. The conflict, which began in April 2023, has resulted in significant humanitarian crises and numerous war crimes.
Senator Risch emphasized the need for accountability: “The Sudanese people continue to suffer unspeakable atrocities, including genocide and war crimes. It is past time the perpetrators of these atrocities be held accountable.” He stressed that while securing a ceasefire and addressing humanitarian needs are essential, protecting civilians must also be prioritized.
Senator Coons stated, “It is time for Congress to act on Sudan. Failing to act as the Sudanese people are forced to flee or die in their homeland is a choice that we do not accept.” The proposed legislation aims to protect Sudanese rights and hold war criminals accountable.
Shaheen highlighted the severity of the crisis: “The war in Sudan has created the most devastating humanitarian crisis in the world,” noting high rates of sexual- and gender-based violence by Rapid Support Forces. She expressed pride in introducing bipartisan legislation for justice and protection.
Young described the situation as “heartbreaking,” emphasizing international responsibility: “The United States and the international community cannot ignore this situation.” He affirmed that their bipartisan effort would spotlight atrocities and support humanitarian responses.
