U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Michael Bennet released a statement regarding the Trump Administration’s recent decision to delay the implementation of tariffs on Mexico and Canada. The proposed tariffs would have increased costs for Americans and affected the United States’ standing as a reliable global partner.
In their joint statement, Shaheen and Bennet said, “The decision to pause the implementation of across-the-board tariffs against Canada and Mexico, two of our strongest international partners and closest neighbors, was the right one.” They noted that such tariffs could have raised prices on everyday items like groceries and utility bills. Furthermore, they argued that this move would contradict the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which President Trump negotiated during his first term.
The senators acknowledged ongoing issues with irregular migration and fentanyl trafficking, emphasizing that both Presidents Sheinbaum of Mexico and Trudeau of Canada are committed to addressing these challenges. They urged President Trump to reconsider any trade actions that might harm U.S. national interests or negatively impact Americans’ well-being.
Shaheen and Bennet affirmed their commitment to collaborating with Canadian and Mexican leaders on transnational concerns, including weapon trafficking from the United States into Mexico.
