U.S. Senators Jim Risch and Roger Wicker, along with 12 other colleagues, have addressed a letter to the Biden-Harris Administration urging a change in policy towards Qatar. The letter was sent to Attorney General Merrick Garland and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, emphasizing the need for immediate action against Hamas officials residing in Qatar.
The senators requested that federal agencies “immediately freeze the assets of Hamas officials living in Qatar” and extradite senior Hamas figures such as Khaled Meshal and Khalil Al-Hayya. They argue that these individuals should face justice for their roles in leading a terrorist organization responsible for attacks on October 7, 2023.
“The defeat of Hamas is within reach,” the senators stated. They highlighted the importance of ending the safe haven that Hamas leadership enjoys abroad to hold them accountable for their actions.
The letter also criticized the current administration’s policy allowing Qatar to host Hamas leaders. The senators claim this has enabled these leaders to oppose ceasefire negotiations publicly and maintain international connections. They urge the administration to pressure Qatar into freezing assets, limiting media access, and restricting travel for these individuals.
Furthermore, they called for seeking indictments against other senior Hamas officials like Khalil Al-Hayya, who allegedly sought support from Iran and Hezbollah prior to last year’s attacks.
This call for action comes after Israel Defense Forces killed Yahya Sinwar, presenting what the senators view as an opportunity to compel Hamas’ surrender.
