U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen and U.S. Representative Gregory W. Meeks have issued a statement in response to a new executive order from President Trump concerning the Foreign Service. The order aims to reform recruitment, performance, evaluation, retention, and personnel standards at the State Department.
In their joint statement, Shaheen and Meeks expressed concern over the potential impacts of the executive order on national security and the integrity of the diplomatic service. They emphasized that “Foreign Service Officers advance and protect U.S. national security interests and American citizens in some of the most dangerous places around the world—no matter who is in the White House.” They highlighted that career diplomats are chosen based on merit rather than political affiliations.
The lawmakers criticized this executive order as part of a series of actions they believe could harm national security and undermine the diplomatic corps’ work. According to them, it could place undue stress on diplomats and their families while affecting the nonpolitical nature of both Foreign and Civil Services.
Looking ahead, Congress has established a bipartisan State Department Reform and Modernization Commission. Budget hearings with Secretary Rubio are anticipated in the coming weeks.
