Idaho Congressman Mike Simpson has announced the inclusion of $12 million in funding for the Idaho Falls Regional Airport Terminal Expansion Project. The funding was secured through Community Project Funding (CPF) in the Fiscal Year 2026 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act at Simpson’s request.
“As Idaho Falls continues to grow, it is essential that the airport grows with it,” said Rep. Simpson. “Expanding the Idaho Falls Regional Airport will better serve the Idaho Falls community, support local jobs, and enhance the city’s status as a top destination for travelers and economic opportunities. I have been a steadfast supporter of our local airports, and I am pleased that this funding will facilitate these necessary improvements.”
Idaho Falls Mayor Rebecca Casper also commented on the importance of this investment: “This $12 million in Community Project Funding is critical as the airport strives to meet the increasing demand for air service. We are grateful for Representative Simpson’s support of this funding to ensure that IDA will remain the regional airport of choice for Eastern Idaho.”
The funds are designated for Phase 1 of the terminal expansion project at Idaho Falls Regional Airport (IDA). This phase focuses on expanding baggage operations by providing more space for outbound baggage handling and future operations. The project aims to improve safety by allowing adequate room for loading baggage carts and upgrading efficiency with a new conveyor system. Additional ticket queueing and counter space will be added to accommodate more air service, along with second-level space intended for future passenger hold areas. Modifications to existing areas will also prepare for an expanded security screening checkpoint.
Addressing criticism about CPF projects being labeled as “wasteful earmarks,” Simpson stated that such funding allows Members of Congress to direct federal dollars toward specific needs within their districts rather than having those funds allocated elsewhere. He emphasized that these projects address clear needs within communities across Idaho and operate within current budget limits.
Simpson currently serves as Idaho’s only appropriator in Congress, giving him a unique position to advocate for state priorities and ensure federal tax dollars benefit local projects. He has represented Idaho’s 2nd district since 1999 after serving in the Idaho House of Representatives from 1984 to 1998.
The proposed expansion project is included in legislation approved by the House Appropriations Committee.
