U.S. Senator Jim Risch, U.S. Representative Michael McCaul, Senator Tim Scott, and Representative John James have expressed their concerns regarding the Biden Administration's temporary appointment of former Congressman Tom Perriello as special envoy for Sudan.

In a joint statement, the lawmakers emphasized their disappointment in the delayed response to the crisis in Sudan, stating, "The temporary appointment of a special envoy to Sudan, 10 months into the war, should not be viewed as a recognition by the Biden Administration of the significance of this crisis. Instead, it demonstrates yet another failure in its response to the crisis."

The legislators highlighted the urgent need for a more permanent presidential envoy to address the ongoing conflict in Sudan, stressing the importance of direct reporting to the president. They lamented the administration's delay in making this appointment, citing bureaucratic issues within the Department as contributing factors.

Calling for increased attention from Secretary Blinken and President Biden, the lawmakers expressed hope that Perriello's appointment would lead to a reassessment of U.S. policy towards Sudan. They urged for the special envoy to be granted the necessary authority to facilitate a reset in the approach to the crisis.

The conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023, has resulted in widespread atrocities and human rights violations. The lawmakers underscored the gravity of the situation, emphasizing the need for immediate action to address the suffering of innocent civilians caught in the crossfire.

Under current legislation, special envoys with significant authority representing the United States must undergo Senate confirmation. The lawmakers' statement underscores the importance of prioritizing Sudan on the foreign policy agenda and ensuring effective leadership in addressing the crisis.
