WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho) emphasized the enduring importance of the Monroe Doctrine in the face of growing influence from foreign powers such as China, Russia, and Iran in the Western Hemisphere. Speaking at an event hosted by the National Security Institute, Risch highlighted the necessity of reasserting the principles of the Monroe Doctrine to safeguard the sovereignty and national security of the United States and neighboring countries.

Risch underscored the contemporary challenges posed by China, Russia, and Iran, stating, "Today, the threats from China, Russia, and Iran are no different." He expressed concerns about nefarious influence operations, authoritarian regime support, and military activities conducted by these nations in countries like Cuba, Nicaragua, Venezuela, and Bolivia.

Pointing to specific actions by Iran, Risch criticized the Biden Administration's policies of appeasement, calling for a more aggressive stance to target Iranian assets. He also highlighted Russia's disinformation campaigns and military presence in the region, emphasizing the need to address these threats.

Regarding China, Risch raised alarms about the country's economic dominance in South America, illegal activities such as fishing in neighboring waters, and strategic infrastructure projects that undermine the sovereignty of nations in the hemisphere. He warned of China's expanding intelligence collection capabilities and military presence, emphasizing the need for the U.S. to prepare for potential threats.

Risch also drew attention to security concerns at the U.S. southern border, linking illegal migration from countries allied with China, Russia, and Iran to potential national security risks. He called for enhanced border control measures to address the influx of illegal aliens, including those on the terrorist watchlist and special interest aliens from the Middle East.

In conclusion, Risch reiterated the importance of upholding the Monroe Doctrine to counter the influence of adversarial powers and protect the interests of the United States and its allies in the hemisphere. Failure to address these threats, he cautioned, could leave the region more vulnerable and less sovereign.
