U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen has expressed her approval of the recent ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, announced by the Biden Administration. The deal includes the release of thirty-three hostages, among them Americans, who have been held by Hamas for 15 months.

"I welcome the Biden Administration’s announcement that a ceasefire deal has been reached to secure the safe release of thirty-three hostages—including Americans—and to begin to bring an end to the conflict in Gaza," stated Shaheen. She acknowledged President Biden's efforts and praised regional mediators for their role in reaching this agreement.

Shaheen emphasized that this initial step should lead to a sustainable ceasefire and aid in rebuilding Gaza. "It’s critical that all the hostages still being held by Hamas, including the remaining American hostages both alive and deceased, come home so families can grieve and heal after prolonged agony," she added. She also stressed the importance of delivering humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza.

The senator highlighted the need for ongoing diplomatic efforts from the United States and its allies to ensure long-term peace and security in the region. "It is vital that all adhere to the terms of the deal and commit to a path that can lead to Israelis and Palestinians living side by side in equal measures of peace, prosperity and mutual recognition, free from the cycle of extremist violence."

Shaheen has consistently supported Israel and advocated for a two-state solution. In 2023, she condemned Hamas attacks on October 7th and introduced a bipartisan resolution against Hamas' use of sexual violence as a weapon. She has been vocal about addressing humanitarian issues in Gaza and has pushed for measures to alleviate civilian suffering.
