Boise State men’s basketball assistant coach Tim Duryea announced on May 15 that he will retire after a 35-year career in college basketball, including the last eight seasons with the Broncos. His final day with Boise State is Friday, May 15.

Duryea joined Boise State before the 2018-19 season and served as the lead offensive coach during one of the most successful periods in program history. The Broncos recorded 171 wins over his eight-year tenure, achieved six seasons with at least 20 wins, made three NCAA Tournament appearances, and captured both the Mountain West regular season and tournament titles in the 2021-22 season.

“I’m grateful for having 35 years as a college coach and really appreciate what the game has done for my family and me over the years,” said Duryea. “I’ve been so fortunate to work for great people and have been around phenomenal coaches. I’m also thankful for all of the players and having the opportunity to see how good of people they are and how much I value them. I’ve lived and traveled to a lot of places, but to finish my career in Boise has been wonderful. Thank you to Coach Rice, Coach Burns and the rest of the Boise State coaching staff over the last eight years, and I’m looking forward to the next chapter with my family.”

Head coach Leon Rice praised Duryea’s contributions by saying: “Tim Duryea was the consummate pro. He added so much to our staff, starting with being an amazing coach and a great person. We were blessed to have him for eight years, and in that time, he made me so much better. I learned a great amount from him, and I know our staff did as well. We’re grateful for him. Once a Bronco, always a Bronco.”

During his time at Boise State, Duryea helped guide teams that reached three consecutive NCAA Tournaments—a first in program history—and set school records for total wins (27) as well as conference victories (15) during their championship run in 2021-22.

Before joining Boise State’s staff, Duryea was head coach at Utah State from 2015-18 after serving there as an assistant or associate head coach since 2001; his earlier coaching stops included Hutchinson Community College (Kansas), North Texas—his alma mater—and Colorado State.

Duryea concludes his career with experience spanning multiple programs across different levels of collegiate basketball competition—including leading teams to eleven NCAA Tournament appearances overall—and plans to discuss his future during a live interview on Bronco Studios Live presented by Ford.
