U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen, Thom Tillis, and Michael Bennet have concluded a bipartisan visit to Ukraine, marking the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion. The delegation visited key sites in Kyiv, including Ukrenergo and the town of Bucha, where they paid respects to civilians affected by Russian forces in 2022.
The senators met with civil society groups involved in documenting war crimes and aiding civilians. They also held discussions with Ruslan Stefanchuk, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, and visited Ohmatdyt Children’s Hospital, which was damaged by a missile strike.
Senator Shaheen emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression: “Bolstering Ukraine’s leverage in this critical time means ending the U.S. self-imposed blockade of U.S. assistance… War criminal Vladimir Putin cannot be trusted.”
Senator Tillis noted the bravery of Ukrainians and called for continued U.S. support: “It’s clear that we must focus on securing a long-term peace agreement to end this war.”
Senator Bennet criticized past U.S. policies while underscoring support for Ukraine: “The United States must remain steadfast in its support for Ukraine… Backing Ukraine today is our best preparation for… deterrence against authoritarian aggression tomorrow.”
During their visit, the senators were welcomed at the U.S. Embassy by Ambassador Bridget Brink and visited St. Andrew’s Orthodox Church in Bucha.
