WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho), ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, expressed deep concerns over the U.S. administration's handling of the conflict and humanitarian emergency in Sudan. During a full committee hearing on the matter, Senator Risch highlighted the lack of tangible progress in addressing the crisis.

Risch emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “Every time we hold a hearing on Sudan, we talk about how the situation has worsened. Despite these public discussions and routine briefings from State, the administration hasn’t actually made any tangible progress in improving or solving the problem.”

The Senator criticized the administration for its delayed response in appointing a special envoy for Sudan, stating, “Despite these efforts, it took 10 months for the administration to appoint you. Even then, you have only been appointed for six months to sidestep the law on serious envoys.”

Senator Risch called on Special Envoy Tom Perriello to present a comprehensive plan of action to address the crisis, urging for bold and resolute action from the U.S. government. He raised concerns about the potential for further escalation of the humanitarian emergency, including famine and genocidal acts.

Furthermore, Senator Risch questioned the effectiveness of the administration's diplomatic efforts in Sudan, particularly in engaging with regional actors like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Iran, and Russia. He stressed the need for a clear strategy to disrupt the actions of outside forces exacerbating the conflict in Sudan.

In conclusion, Senator Risch stated, “This committee, I believe, on both sides of the aisle, is anxious to hear an actual way forward. Again, you have a difficult task.” He urged for specific, actionable plans from the administration to address the crisis in Sudan and prevent further loss of life.
