U.S. Senators, led by Jim Risch, have announced their intention to introduce the Stand with Israel Act in November when Congress reconvenes. The legislation aims to cut off U.S. funding to United Nations (UN) agencies that restrict Israel's participation. This follows a resolution enhancing the Palestinian Authority's status at the UN.
Senator Risch stated, "Any attempt to alter Israel’s status at the UN is clearly anti-Semitic." He emphasized that if changes occur, the U.S. should cease supporting the UN system. Senator Cotton added, "A move to downgrade Israel’s status... will be met with severe consequences."
Senator Grassley described Israel as "the only democracy in the Middle East," arguing against debates on its UN membership status due to antisemitic actions. Dr. Cassidy warned of a "heavy cost" for attempts to reduce Israel's status.
Senator Sullivan expressed concern over longstanding antisemitism at the UN and called for designating Hamas as a terrorist organization. Senator Daines criticized potential discrimination against Israel and voiced support for the legislation.
"The United Nations has become a safe haven for anti-Semitic actors," said Senator Lee, stressing that attempts against Israel's status are hostile acts undermining its existence.
The proposed bill responds to reports that the Palestinian Authority might seek to downgrade Israel's UN status after gaining enhanced rights through a General Assembly resolution in May 2024.
The Stand with Israel Act mirrors existing prohibitions on funding entities elevating the Palestinian Authority's status, seeking similar measures if any agency limits Israeli participation.
