U.S. Senators from both parties, led by Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, took to the Senate floor to express continued support for Ukraine amid ongoing conflict with Russia. Joining Shaheen were Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Peter Welch (D-VT), Susan Collins (R-ME), Chris Coons (D-DE), Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Michael Bennet (D-CO), and Thom Tillis (R-NC). The group emphasized the importance of strong U.S. backing for Ukraine, advocating for security guarantees and aid to Ukrainians on the frontlines.
Shaheen stated, "I understand and appreciate the desire for peace in Ukraine, and I understand why we should end the senseless killing of innocent people. And I think if you ask Ukrainians, they want this war to end too. They’re watching how this war is destroying their country. But the best way to make a deal here is to give Ukraine as much leverage as possible."
The Senators called on colleagues from both parties to support Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity while urging Moscow's withdrawal from occupied territories. Shaheen highlighted that Americans recognize the significance of this conflict, saying, "Americans across this country understand why this fight is important to us. It's why we’re here on the floor today to reiterate that we stand with Ukraine."
In her remarks, Shaheen expressed hope for a potential ceasefire and advocated maintaining sanctions on Russia while considering NATO membership for Ukraine. She noted Vladimir Putin's history of not adhering to agreements and described witnessing firsthand the devastation caused by Russian forces in places like Bucha.
Highlighting bipartisan support in Congress as crucial for democracy and international order, Shaheen remarked on North Korea's involvement alongside Russia against Ukraine, with Iran supplying missiles and China providing support.
Reflecting on a recent visit to Ukraine with Senators Tillis and Bennet, Shaheen praised Ukrainian military advancements and resilience despite Russian advantages in size and manpower. She shared efforts by New Hampshire communities raising $4 million for Ukrainian aid.
Shaheen concluded by urging colleagues from both sides of the aisle to continue supporting Ukraine: "Thousands of Ukrainians have given their lives in this fight... While they’ve been on the frontlines for all of us defending the international order that has served American interests since the end of World War II."
