U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Jim Risch have expressed their support for the Biden Administration's decision to impose sanctions on General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the leader of the Sudanese Armed Forces. The sanctions are in response to what has been described as "brutal war tactics," including attacks on civilians and infrastructure, blocking humanitarian aid, and using food as a weapon.
In a joint statement, Shaheen and Risch highlighted the impact of these actions, particularly on women and children. They pointed out that authorities in Port Sudan have deliberately obstructed life-saving aid across the country.
The senators emphasized that Sudan is facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis characterized by famine and genocide. They called for international cooperation to protect civilians, ensure unhindered delivery of aid, end external interference in the conflict, and hold those responsible for atrocities accountable.
"The people of Sudan deserve to live in dignity, safety and security," they stated.
