Following presentations from city departments to City Council in May, the city is releasing Mayor McLean’s proposed Fiscal Year 2024 budget to the public today. The budget will be presented at the Boise City Council Budget Workshop on Tuesday, June 27, 2023.
The proposed budget for FY24 makes investments in public safety, housing, public transportation, and climate action while providing tax relief for Boiseans.
“We are focused on caring for the people of this city. I am proud that this budget provides property tax relief for homeowners and directs resources to keep our city safe, make homes more affordable, grow our economy, take climate action, and ensure we care for our families while giving back to our unique and welcoming community,” said Mayor Lauren McLean. “Now more than ever, we must support all the people of Boise to ensure we’re truly a city for everyone.”
McLean will ask Boise City Councilmembers to approve a base growth rate of 2%, lower than the allowable increase of 3%. Keeping the growth rate well below the allowable increase has saved Boise taxpayers $7.5 million since 2020. As a result of decreasing residential assessments and recent statewide legislation, most Boise homeowners can expect a decline in their property tax bill this year.
To provide additional relief to elderly, disabled, and widowed homeowners, Mayor McLean is allocating an additional $1.2 million to continue the city’s tax rebate program. Boise was the only city in Idaho to offer this relief. Nearly 90% of eligible taxpayers applied for the program in FY23.
