WASHINGTON – Senator Jim Risch, the ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, expressed concerns about the U.S. alliance strategy in the Indo-Pacific during a committee hearing. Risch highlighted various issues and shortcomings in the current approach towards alliances and partnerships in the region.

Senator Risch emphasized the historical strategic interest of the United States in Asia, stating, “The United States has had a strategic interest in Asia being open and free for over two centuries.” He pointed out the importance of maintaining a balance of power favorable to the United States to protect interests, sovereignty, and economic prosperity.

Risch raised a red flag regarding China's increasing dominance in the region, supported by a growing partnership with Russia. He criticized the lack of substantial response to China's actions, such as territorial seizures and economic dependencies, urging for a more robust approach to address shared threats in the region.

The Senator expressed disappointment in the administration's handling of alliances, citing instances where announcements were made without clear plans or follow-through. Risch particularly highlighted the delayed negotiations and certification issues related to security alliances like AUKUS and defense cooperation with key allies like Australia and the UK.

Furthermore, Risch criticized the administration for prioritizing ideology over pragmatism and protectionism over economic engagement in its approach to alliances. He emphasized the need for concrete actions and effective strategies to counter the growing China-Russia alignment and ensure the interests of the United States and its allies in the Indo-Pacific.

In conclusion, Senator Risch called for a more proactive and strategic approach to U.S. alliances in the Indo-Pacific, urging for actions that align with shared objectives and effectively address the challenges posed by China and Russia. He stated, “Initiatives must have concrete actions if they are to help us win this competition. The administration’s performance is underwhelming.”
